Have you heard of “link baiting techniques” before? It is a cunning way to drive traffic to your blog or webiste. Like other methods, such as yesterdays post on how to share a blog post on facebook - You can use it in your business to leverage the traffic and “social proof” from your visitors.

What Do These Link Bait Strategies look Like?

Well, to be honest there are many link baiting examples that we can explore. However I am not going to bore you with an exhaustive list of link bait ideas. I will give you a few so that you can understand what the whole idea is.

Software

One example is creating viral software. A lot of us have actually been seduced by this method without even knowing. A classic example is free blog themes. These blog theme creators didn’t just wake up out of bed one day and tought, I want to spend my time to create a free blog theme to help the world! (ha)

The payback for these guys is a “cheeky” link back from your blog. Think of a really popular free blog theme, and now just think of how many one way backlinks that creator is getting to promote his product or services. Clever dude!

Controversy

In fact you do not have to be a clever software developer to use link baiting techniques. You can simply create content that people will want to share and link to. An example of this is a blog post that has a controversial view point that will provoke some debate. Be warned, you have to be careful not to tread on the wrong toes in your industry. The internet has made the world a small place!

Making People Laugh

Another approach is humorous content. if you can create some content that will make people laugh, they will instinctivly want to share your content with all their friends, and their friends will want to share it with their friends, and so on.

Out of all of these techniques I prefer this one. It is a lot more rewarding getting people to smile, and it makes them happy and want to return.

  • Oh boy, I've been seduced into reading this post. I'm glad I did Wayne.

I like your approach to the viral software. That's pretty clever and wasn't even aware of it. I learned something new.

Thanks for that because I'm an information junkie. :)

  • See, that's why I like reading your blog, Wayne -- I get to add some new words to my vocabulary.

Honestly, that's one of the best headlines I've ever seen!

I like to make people laugh, too.

I think you almost have to be even more audacious on the Internet to grab the attention of all those wondering eyeballs...
  • I'm going fishing with some cheeky link bait!

That title alone is a great example of link baiting. I think having a creative title for your blog post is the easiest way to generate interest and get some traffic.

Refer to popular topics or even things that are hot in the news right now. Popular TV shows, movies, current events, these are all things that are in the forefront of people's minds and can get some extra traction for you if you just give it some thought.

Keep the good stuff coming Wayne!

  • Hey Wayne,
I just want to say first of all I had to go to Dictionary.com to look up the meaning of "Cheeky" before I could even start to comment. Now that I have a grasp on that, posting something really funny is the best way to get some of those links. Even if people don't know you, they will have to click on something that is crazy enough or interesting enough.

Dang, I was gonna try and use cheeky in a sentence, but my train of thought has left the building.

    Good stuff,

  • Hey Eric,

Thanks for the Dictionary check there, I foolishly assumed most would know what I meant. It must have been Betty above there that made you loose focus! (ha)

Thanks for passing by my friend.
  • Hey Wayne,

You just brought it to my attention that I have been seduced and didn't know it : O

Free blog themes. I never thought of that aspect of it!

You are correct about being careful of creating controversy. NM is a small world!

    Great Post!

  • Hey Wayne,

Clever way to build a one way link...Offering a Free Theme!

As some may know, another great way to create traffic is by commenting. It doesn't always create a backlink if they have the 'NoFollow' tags on. However, it drives traffic!

    Chat with you later...

  • Hey Josh,

Much agreed there, regardless of "Nofollow" tag you get some quality traffic.
  • Great post Wayne

    Nicely put. Linking Baiting.

It is very true when you see something funny or just plain cool you just want to share it (which is why I ReTweeted this).

The free web-themes is a classic way to generate backlinks. If you have the know-how to create a theme you can be onto a great thing!

    Thanks for sharing
