Get Backlinks Fast or Take Time Like Fine Wine?

Did you know that the best wine has been prepared slowly over time to perfection? Well, I will not pretend to be a wine expert but some things are best when you take time.

The Question Is…… Should We Take This Approach With Backlinks?

On my SEO geek journeys I see many debates about getting backlinks fast for your blog or content. These are the concerns that some people bring up:

  • My site will be de-indexed!
  • I will be sandboxed
  • The Bogey man will get me! (ha - maybe not that one)…..

Here Is What I Think….

The problem that I see is, when you have a new blog or piece of content you are really enthusiastic about getting it ranked and you generally get backlinks fast. Then the reality of the task sets in and you start to drop off. You know, one link here, one link there….

This is the mistake!….

Link Velocity Is More Important Than Getting backlinks fast

By all means get backlinks fast, but you have to make sure that you are “consistent”. So if you are blasting backlinks at your site for a week then stop, you are in trouble. What the search engines want to see is your site gaining popularity over a consistent period.

Have you ever seen your site ranking for a top spot, then drop off? Likely that you never have good link velocity.

  • Hi Wayne,

Looks like we were thinking along the same lines in our recent blog posts. You know what they say about "great minds", ha.

I don't know of any fast way to build backlinks, so I'm letting mine ripe like fine wine.

    Have an awesome weekend!

  • Hey Wayne,

I've just used social media/bookmarking and video marketing and I've been able to get quick results this way.

I'm glad you've brought this subject up, though, because I've learned some great tips from the comments.
  • Hey Wayne,

And it all comes back to consistency AGAIN! ;)

    Good stuff here.

    Susanna
  • Yo Wayne,
You are starting to give out some of my SEO secrets here. Quit taking all of the voodoo out of SEO or there is going to be a ton more competition. You are correct about consistency. It looks unnatural to the SEs if you have a big backlinking campaign going only to stop it or slow it dramatically.

Sand box material for sure if you don't pay attention to this post,
    Eric
  • Hey Wayne,

So here is the scoop I get from the top SEO guys in the industry. You can shoot out your social media backlinks with an Uzi, but backlinks from other sites needs to start slow, with 5 to 10 a week and build consistently from there. After consistently increasing by 5 or so a week for a couple of months, you can pretty much hit it as hard as you want on all fronts.

The cool thing about social media backlinks is that Google won't sand box you for them. How would Google be able to justify penalizing you for other people digging your work? Eric McMillan and myself ran several tests earlier this year that gave both our sites social media links in the thousands without having to play in the sand box.

    Great post brother
  • Hey Wayne,

I've had mixed reactions from fast vs slow linking, using fast one article made it to the top spot out of just over 1.3 million while another got sandboxed so quick it made my head spin....

Would be cool to get an inside look into exactly how google works it all out

    Thanks,
    Matt
  • Hey Wayne,

That's a very interesting concept - link velocity. So like Jerome said, the key is to be consistent getting backlinks too.

    Thanks,
    Wayne
  • Hi Wayne,

I second Jerome on this one. Slow and steady wins the race. As I receive visits from quality blogs like yours my blog moves steadily higher in ranking.

Thanks for sharing your SEO insight :)

    Ryan
  • Hey Wayne, I have read some of the debate on a backlinking and it seems to me that consistency is the key. While I'm no SEO expert, I do work projects with people that only do SEO (and they debate most of the time).

It seems that consistency trumps speed!

    -James
  • Hey Wayne,

The best way is to consistent take action and be persistent, never giving up. Before you know it, then your backlinks will increase.

Slow and steady wins the race. It's the same thing with our blog.

    Have a great day,
    Jerome Ratliff
  • Hey Jerome,

Yeah, steady is the way. However you can go fast and steady ;)

Thanks for passing by my friend.
  • Great tip here. This should be told to all newbie site owners.

Pick a pace that they can work to and stick with it, instead of the up and down, some here some there effect.
  • Hey Dwayne,

Yeah, I am sue all newbies could benefit for sure.

    Thanks for passing by.
  • Wayne,

    Can it be personal preference?
Some people would rather do it fast and do get great results. Look at David Wood,
he did it fast and wow, did he ever get results.

Some people want to do it slow and take their time because they don't have
the time. I really see mixed reactions on this subject. I think Josh hits it on
    the head with consistency.

I am curious what the rest of the folks have to say...hmmm

The next issue of WWN's blog critique I hear deals with making SEO a
    priority. :)
I am curious to see if their SEO advice deals with backlinking.

    Party on Wayne,
    Tommy
  • Hey Tommy,

Interesting view, I actually agree with what your saying.

My point is fast is fine, as long as you maintain it. David wood definately done well. Actually he is a fine example of consistency, he hammered it consitent and fast over 60-90 days to hit big numbers.

    Thanks for passing by buddy.
  • Hey Wayne,

Thanks for anwering a question I had been wondering about.

    I like a good fine wine : )

    Have a good day!
    Twila
  • Hey Twila,

    Glad that helped.

By the way, glad you appreciate the fine wine!
  • Hey Wayne,

That's cool that you are discussing this. I see way to often individuals start the process of building their backlinks and then stop. You are correct! Search engines wants to see consistancy within a blog. Thanks for sharing your insight!

    Chat with you later...
    Josh
  • Hey Josh,

I know you are "Mr Consistency" so I know you walk the walk as well as talk the talk :)

    Thanks for passing by.
  • marcusbaker
So it seems steady and consistent wins the day again. Funny how this comes up time and time again. Thanks for the tips Wayne.

    ~Marcus
  • Hey Marcus,

Yeah, consistent, but does not have to be slow.

    Thanks for passing by.
