Desire To Succeed - A Lesson From Think and Grow Rich

the desire to succeed

the desire to succeed

One of the most powerful books that I have read to date (or shall I say listened too - audio book) is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

I am sure if I spoke to 5 different people they would give 5 different parts of the book they love. For me it was chapter 1: Desire!

Chapter 1 - DESIRE
This chapter in particular explains about the pursuits of Edwin C Barnes. He had nothing to offer apart from an inner burning desire to work with Mr Thomas Edison. For those that do not know, Mr Edison was succesful entrepreneur who started the Edison Electric Light Company and had the complete opposite lifestyle and financial status to Edwin C Barnes at their first meeting.

However Mr Barnes was so focused on his goal, to partner with Mr. Edison, that he would not acknowledge any barrier between him and Mr Edison.

So this guy hitches a lift on a train dressed in rags to make his way to meet Mr. Edison. Can you imagine meeting a potential business partner that turned up looking like a tramp?

Well the beauty is, Mr. Barnes had such a “Desire To Succeed” that he pursued his goal and eventually did partner with Mr. Edison and became a very wealthy man indeed. It is a classic rags to riches story.

So what has Mr Barnes’s “Desire To Succeed” got to do with us?

Well, this is the recipe for success with home based business. Of course you need MLM team building, Network Marketing prospecting, home based business leads and much more.

However the starting block is the desire to succeed. You see, there are so many challenges and pitfalls that are in your way. If you do not have the desire to succeed you will never overcome them. It has to be a truly deep down burning feeling to never give up, even if it is really hard going.

So, if you are wondering where to start with your online business, it is not about what blog theme do i need or article marketing tips, it is about how much you want it and the desire to succeed.

What was your favorite part of Think and Grow Rich?

  • Hey Wayne, hmmm, how do you pick just one thing from a book this great?

It definitely has to be faith for me. "Faith is a state of mind which you may develope at will". Awesome

Great post, anyone can benefit from this book. I believe that so much so, that I bought the rights to it and give it away free on my site. No one should be without this knowledge.
  • Hi Wayne,

Yes, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to succeed in business, period.

One of my favorite stories is of the prospector who quit when he was ONLY 3 feet from gold -- he just didn't know it!

Boy, did that story teach me a lesson...

Also, I love the idea of the mastermind -- probably one of the most profound concepts ever written about.
  • Hey Derek,

Glad you mentioned "3 feet from gold" part, that was definitely a great part of the book and a good example to all the home business entrepreneurs out there.

    Cheers for passing by.
  • "Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit".
    &
"If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way".

Are some of my favoutite quotes from the book.

I also love the desire chapter. I think every page / minute (if audio) of the book has a golden nugget which can by applied to all our businesses and lives and it will make a massive difference.

  • Wow - some big quotes there Dwayne.

Yeah, glad you enjoyed the desire chapter too.

    Cheers for passing by.
  • Hey there Wayne,

I think I have read this book about 5 times and listened to the audiobook about 20 times.

The part that really hit home with me is how everything radiates with energy and our bodies began from this matter. It's a very small section, but it blows my mind. It's truly powerful when you think what are minds are really capable of.

Especially when we are only using a very small percentage of our minds. It's crazy good knowing we have much more to learn and bring to the world. Kind of like what you're doing here.

    Take care,
    Jerome Ratliff
  • Hey Jerome,

Yeah, it sure is a powerful book. I will admit there were a couple of chapters that nearly fried my brain, so I had to listen to it a few times to really digest.

    Worth every minute though.

    Cheers for passing by buddy.
  • Wayne,
You hit on one of my favorite parts of my favorite book. I think everyone should read this book and take note that nothing is impossible if you truly believe it and have a burning desire.

    Great post,
    Eric

P.S. I first listened to it on audio too, but had to buy the hard copy afterwards
  • That is great Eric - When I first listened to the audio I used to do a lot of miles in my car, so it was my perfect chance turn my car into a personal development library.

Glad you enjoyed the same chapter.

    Thanks for passing by.
  • Hey Wayne,

That is my second favorite book. Of course my first favorite book is the Bible.

In Think & Grow Rich, the chapter that slapped me when I read it was on "Imagination". When I read that desire is only a thought and imagination is the impulse of desire. Man...I tell you I couldn't put that book down!

    Great post!
    Josh
  • Hey Josh,

Another great chapter you highlighted there! It is a big book to read, but it has so much in it.

Cheers for passing by my friend.
