Have you ever smelled a skunk before? Phew! What a smell… (ha)…

When you are in the process of perfecting your article marketing campaign you may get frustrated and use such questions as: Why Didn’t This Stinky Article Get Onto Page 1? I know, because I have spent time asking myself the same questions before!

So, to save you anymore hair loss and frustration I have a few suggestions as to why your articles may not be ranking. Think of it as article marketing 101 or article marketing for newbies, you know where I am coming from.

First Thing To Check - Did You Choose The Right Keyword?

Before you even start writing your first article in your article marketing campaign, you have to make sure that you select the right keyword.

It is the same for any content, earlier this week I exposed the YouTube keyword Tool that is used for video marketing.

For article marketing it is very similar, you need to choose the right keyword research techniques. Luckily you are in the right place for information on this, because my blog is full of these techniques, use the search function and read up on this.

Have You Backlinked The Article?

Backlinks are very important when it comes to article marketing 101. The more “quality” backlinks you can get will force your article to to the top of the pack.

However, if you do your keyword research well enough you can find some real golden nuggets that need hardly any, if not no backlinks. Yes, that is what I said - No back Links!

But, be warned you need to dig hard for these “bad boys”, especially if you want high search volume from them.

The Article marketing 101 Secret…..

I am going to let you in on a secret, in my opinion, no matter how hard you try and perfect your article marketing campaign, you can never guarantee a top place search engine position. With experience you can be very sure, but never 100% certain.

Why is that? Well the fact is, if we knew the exact search algorithms we would be able to manipulate the results and many could also abuse this power. So, as marketers we are always fighting the tide, as the search algorithms can change regularly.

So, don’t beat yourself up over one article, as long as the majority are winners, you are winning :)

  • Keywords are Key! Picking one with no search volume and you might rank as soon as the content is indexed. One with too much competition will result in your content never seeing the light of Oogle page 1.

    Hey Wayne,

Some articles you're sure will hit #1 and then for some reason they just fall off the planet.... isn't that interesting?

My tip would be anchor text, if you can have the text matching you're keyword on the backlinks it can help.

Just don't over do it or Google will raise it's hand in anger...

    Thanks,
    Matt

  • There's no getting around having to do keyword research, is there Wayne? ;)

Seriously, I play this game every time I come to your site now where I try to guess what keywords you're trying to rank for. LOL

  • Great post Wayne,

as always you are on top of your keyword research. I have picked up several nuggets here since I first found your blog.

    Keep it up brother.

  • hey Wayne,

I always like when you talk about article marketing. I learn more and more about this from you.

I don't know if you realize this, but you're saving me loads of time in trying to figure out what works. For sometime I've been doing article marketing and was getting subpar results. Then I implemented the tips you speak about and my click thru rates have drastically changed.

    Thanks for that...

  • Wayne,

I am getting better at this and my long tail keywords are getting shorter and I am showing
up more often on the first page of googs. You provided some extra
value as always and will have to dig some more into keyword research.

I surprisingly ranked #1 on a keyword that was 5.5 million searched, pumped
    me up!!

    Talk to you soon,
    Tommy D.

  • Holy Cow, Tommy! Congrats on that!

Wayne, I have had a fair amount of experience with article marketing. Most of my earlier attempts were rather dismal, mainly because I did not understand keywords very well. Then of course there have been some which I thought were brilliantly crafted so I would rank easily - no such luck. On the other hand I have ranked for some keywords which I really shouldn't have done so all in all you can only do what you can do and some of it will just remain a mystery.
