An Idiots Guide on How to Reply on Twitter – Is It As Easy As You Think?

Right, you are here to find out how to reply on Twitter. Some of you will think this is a very obvious answer but is it? Personally I was shocked to see that there is actually quite a few people out there that do not get this.

My objective is to teach you how to use the reply function on Twitter and also explain another fact about it that some people may not know. How does that sound?

Basically when you log into Twitter you have direct messages & Tweets. This article is based on Tweets. For those that do not know, direct messages are not displayed in the main message area. They are stored for your eyes only.

When I say Tweet I mean the flurry of messages that are listed in your home page from all of your active followers.

OK, the way that you reply is by simply using a special key. It is the ‘@’ sign. When you use this symbol followed by the user name it directs your tweet to that person. You can do this in two ways.

1) Typing it in manually

2) Using the Reply button along side any tweet

Here is the additional insight I promised, most people assume that your reply will be seen by every one of your recipient’s followers. However that is not the case. The only way that you can see replies from another person is if they are mutual followers. Does that make sense?

For example: John replies to Kim, and Kim is being followed by Bob. Bob will never see the reply. The only way Bob can see the reply is if he is following John as well.

I know it is confusing at first but read it a few times to think it through and take in how to reply on Twitter!
